VP15 Volo Chip

This is a Volo Performance VP15 Performance Chip review / analysis and comparison to the many other chips we have reviewed so far. The VP15 Performance Chip is available via the website, volochip.com. Let’s take a look:

 

Company Profile

The manufacturer is a company called Volo Performance,  according to the packaging. Their websites, www.volochip.com or www.voloperformance.com, offers these and earlier versions of their chips. They are based in Arkansas and have been in the tuning market for several years, giving them more weight than previously reviewed products.

 

Cost

The cost on the website at the time of this review, was $129.95 USD for the VP15, which claims to provide enhanced pickup, power and fuel economy improvements.

The cost is an acceptable one, given that it appears to be a real chip, not a resistor or light blinker scam. It is an average price point.

 

Product Appearance

The OBD performance module comes in the clear case shown above, with a flexible OBD cable for fitment to the OBD port.

The install steps are fairly straightforward:

“1) Install software to your PC laptop or computer and run setup.exe ( Will not work on Mac’s, PC Only)

2) Program your chip. Start V-link and insert provided cable in the volo and your usb port. Follow instructions to fine tune your chip, to your specific car, year make, model.

3) Start your car and warm up your engine, before plugging in the OBD 2 port connector.

4) Plug the Volo VP15 into your car’s under dash 16 pin OBD2 port.  Press the RESET button, once car is hot and idling. Wait till the calibration light show calms down, before driving. (about a minute or 2)

5) DRIVE Your volo chip is self learning and will continue to adjust itself to your driving style over time.

ENJOY the gas savings and more pick up than before.”

Sounds more believable than previous modules we tested – Let’s see if it works.

 

Internal Analysis

After removing the cover of the module, we  see a much more complex circuit board than the previous chips – a newer PIC chip by Microchip with an onboard USB driver, dual voltage regulators, and a 20MHz crystal, as opposed to the 4MHz ones in all the previous light blinker scams. So far, this board appears to have the capability to do what they say it does:

We also examined the OBD connections from the connector to the circuit board and the following nine pins are connected: 2,4,5,6,7,10,14,15,16.

Let’s  check out the OBD protocols and which pins they require:

From this chart, we can see the following protocols and which pins must be present for them to be used:

CAN – 4, 6, 14, 16

PWM -2, 4, 5, 10, 16

VPW – 2, 4, 5, 16

ISO – 4, 5, 7, 16

So we can conclude from this that the Volo VP15 module:

HAS all OBD connections for the CAN protocol

HAS all OBD connections for the PWM protocol

HAS all OBD connections for the ISO protocol

HAS all OBD connections for the VPW protocol

From these connections, the VP15 does have the capability to interface to any of these protocols.

 

Operation

We connected the VP15 to our 2012 BMW 530i 3.0L L6 as instructed and the lights came on as expected:

We followed the instructions, connected it to the software and programmed it for the vehicle year, make, model and mode desired. We drove only a few miles and immediately noticed definite improvement in throttle response and pickup power. After a few tanks we also noticed an improvement of almost 2MPG on our BMW 530i. Definitely an improvement! The VP15 allows three modes of tuning, Max power gain, Mix of Power gain and Fuel economy, and Gas saver mode. We chose the middle mode, and so far, it has made changes to both!

 

Analysis

It is clear from our analysis so far that the Volo VP15 Performance Chip is the real deal and is a good choice for those seeking a general tuning solution.

  1. I can confirm this. I too purchased a VP15 and it definitely makes a difference on my 2011 Honda Accord. Instant improvement in power. Kudos to you guys for these in depth reviews and for helping to keep people from falling for the scams

      1. The literature says to remove the performance chip with the motor off. After removal, the vehicle should return to stock. Good luck!

  2. Nice review. Hello all. I just ordered a VP15 chip for my truck. I can speak from experience that i’ve Previously bought the Volo fuel saver (fs3) chips for two other cars I’ve owned. In a 1998 Honda Civic, I saw 40 pre chip to 46 miles per gallon post chip. In my 2006 Honda Accord v6, I went from 29 pre chip, to 33 mpg post chip. That was 150,000 miles ago. The accord has 312,000 miles and the chip is still in there. No engine problems. Excited to get the VP 15. Volo states that the vp15 gas saver mode will deliver results like the fs3 chip. The nice thing about the vp15 is you can move it to another vehicle by simply unplugging it and reprogramming it yourself. The fs3 is factory programmed for one vehicle.

  3. Just installed the VP15 in my ’03 Odyssey. Seems to be working though as I told the company I’m not interested in paying for a dyno to determine absolute numbers. I’m using the “mixed” mode. As a side note, I’ve been communicating with HMA Racing (the amateur team at Honda Alabama plant who race an Odyssey, among others). They’ve helped me tweak Grandpa’s kid hauler to the tune of about 15hp gain and a couple mpg to boot. Not sure what the VP15 will add to that?

    The ’03 Odyssey is powered by a 3.5L VTEC engine. I have a K&N drop in filter, Magnaflow exhaust, Castro Edge all synthetic oil & Bosch filter, and lightweight wheels and “ECO” performance tires (Bridgestone BFS Serenity Plus). I’ve also installed H&R sport springs that lower about 1.5 inches reducing air turbulence.

    The engine originally rated at 240hp and about the same torque numbers. Mpg listed 18/25, but I’m consistently getting 21/28 mpg which matches the new “Earth Dreams” engine from Honda with a 9-speed (or 10) automatic transmission. That engine is rated at 280hp, I’m guessing I’m getting that or maybe better with all the upgrades including the VP15?

  5. Hi. I would like to ask for vp15 owner. I have bought one for my mazda cx5 and the unit works. It did show green led lighted on.

    But when I shut off my car engine, and park my car, I still saw the green light. It means it was powered on the whole time. (the “com” also blinking even after my car was shut off) I’m afraid it will drain my car battery and fried up the chip itself if it was being turn on 24 hours.

    Did your chip also behave like this?
    Or is it only my car problem?

    1. We are not the manufacturer of the VP15, but it is one of the few chips we tested that actually produced gains. Our module did have a blinking light when the vehicle was turned off, but from the manual it states that on some vehicles it may not enter sleep mode. According to volo, this will not drain the battery. We would suggest contacting volo if you need more information. It sounds like on some vehicles, the OBD bus remains active even after the vehicle is turned off. Perhaps this is why some vehicles allow it to enter sleep mode and others do not…

    2. My VP15 would be turned into single RED flash light after few 10th seconds once ignition turned off, it will be turned to GREEN lights in another few 10th seconds, back and forth. But after few 10th minutes, it just remained as single RED flash light and seems not consume too much current in that state.

    1. While we used the vehicle we had available for our tests, a BMW, this chip is one of the only two out of all that we tested so far that actually produced results. We would assume it would also produce gains on a Corvette as well. Perhaps you can let us know your results if you decide to try it? Thanks for checking us out!

    1. We have not tested the volo VP12 yet – it is supposed to be a previous generation, so we would assume it would be similar. We are always reviewing new products. Check back soon!

  7. Hi, i can confirm the Volo VP12 also works! Since 2012 I have been using a VP12 on a 2004 Diamante 3.5 V6 and the difference is very noticeable when the battery is disconnected for replacement or for misc electrical work and if the chip is not ‘reset’ again as per the set-up instructions the car feels quite sluggish in response. This is sharpened-up again when the chip is reset once more, and it feels quite taut and the sports wagon lol.. so I have now also got a new VP15 to try out on a Volvo S40i 2.4 5 cylinder engine .. will be interesting to see if it works as well as the VP12, which is quite a bit cheaper to buy actually but more of a fiddle to install. The VP15 seems very easy to just plug ‘n play.

  8. I got a vp15, for my 2014 ford fusion titanium. I also have that green light that stays on after the car is off. From the staff comments here, it sounds like this is safe, and normal for some cars?

    1. Yes, we have heard this from others who have the VP15 – according to the manufacturer, it happens on some vehicles and is normal

  10. Thanks for the honest information and work. I have a 5.3 liter Suburban with automatic. There is so much scamming about mileage and hydrogen out there who knows what to believe. I called Volo and questioned them if they had any HHO results on a V-8 to report. They were straight up honest saying they did not. They also told me they didn’t have any results on their HHO unit. I wonder if you guys have looked into this yet? A very expensive adjustable unit is claiming some incredible numbers, however due to the scams I am wary of even trying their unit. When I called them I got a message, when I called Volo I got a person. I think I will try Volo and use my hydrogen system. If you want to know my results contact me. Thanks again

      Any updates on your HHO system with the VOLO. ? previously I used an HHO unit with the volo VS2 on a Toyota Camry 2012 with no noticeable results. Will appreciate your feed back.

    3. I have been using a Volo chip with HHO for several years on a 3.5L isuzu, 6 cylinder engine. (since 5/2010) My mpgs went up from around 14 – 15 to 17 – 19 average. That’ s in mixed driving conditions city/highway. I have seen as much as 21 mpg on a very humid day (fog and mist falling). The challenge is finding the ‘sweet spot’ on how much HHO your engine requires. It took months of tinkering and tweaking to get this figured out. For my 3.5L engine it seems to be around 5 – 6 amps of current flow through the hydrolyzer. I had wondered recently if the Volo chip was really working or not; kinda forgot what the mpg’s used to be. So, i unplugged the Volo and turned of the HHO for a few weeks and sure enough my mpg’s went back to around 14 average under all conditions. Mind you this engine has 167,000+ miles on it now. But, she does have relatively new pre and post-CAT O2 sensors installed. I believe my Volo chip is called the FS1 HHO. Volo has come a long way since when I got my chip back in 2010.

  11. Hi guys, really glad you have this site since I was looking all around to get some honest reviews on all these chips. Almost fell for some of the garbage out there until I found your site. Picked up the Volo right away for my 2018 Impreza and have driven several hundred miles with and without it so far and can confirm that I am getting about 1-2 more MPG and the 91+ octane tune will also get you a little more consistent power through the revs while accelerating. The difference is quite small, but definitely noticeable. You’re not going to get these miracle gains, but for $130 it’s better than not having it.

Thank you for your review I own a 997 turbo and saw your review on the chipyourcar too late for me to react because I had already bought it and it is on the way, However, I have now purchased the VP15 and it is now on the way also. Even though I had to learn a lesson because your review was not easy to find and this lesson cost me over $300.00, $209.00 for the scam and $129.95 for the Volo. I will end up with my performance gain and gas mileage in the end. But the big win for me is I won’t damage my $100,000 car, Thank You very very much.

    1. I got scammed by ChipYourCar.com also, however they have a 30 day money back guarantee with HASSLES that I am currently dealing with right now to not exceed the 30 day time period. They got me with their fake reviews, people and their placebo effects, dyno tested (no data to back it up), the money back guarantee and a life time warranty on a light blinker scam.

  13. Hello, I installed the Volo VP15 in a 2014 Ram 3500 6.4L.
    After 4 weeks and 500 miles I can say the chip works.
    I programmed the chip for gas mileage and my usage was 15mpg and now is up to 18.5mpg.

  14. Got one of these for my 2011 Camry. Was expecting some gains but not this fast. The first day after install i noticed a definite improvement in response and power.     1. No, it returned the vehicle to normal when we removed it for testing. The manufacturer states it makes no permanent changes and cannot be detected after removal. Good luck

    1. Can the car be set back to factory by removing the chip?
    2. Does this newer model need to be spliced into the ODB?

    1. Yes, our model reset to stock values when it was removed. The VP15 did not require wire splicing, but connected via an OBD port. Good luck!

  16. I’ve installed on my 2014 Cadillac XTS VSPORT and am wondering if anyone can tell me exactly what parameters are adjusted with the optional aftermarket add-on selections? In other words, if I choose ‘yes’ to CAI, ‘yes’ to underdrive pulley, etc. what exactly do each of those do?

    1. You would have to contact the manufacturer, but it should be compatible as both connect to different locations on the vehicle and do different functions. Good luck!
